Every revealed cell either shows a number or is blank. A blank cell means none of the surrounding eight cells contain a mine. A numbered cell tells you exactly how many mines are lurking in its immediate neighborhood. By cross-referencing the numbers around unrevealed cells, you can logically deduce which are safe to click and which should be flagged as mines. The satisfying click of clearing a large blank region — watching the board cascade open — is a uniquely rewarding feeling that keeps players coming back.
